Att dricka en mindre kopp espresso på morgonen och eftermiddagen när energin börjar ta slut är någonting som uppskattas av många i världen. En kopp espresso är mindre än en traditionell kopp svart kaffe men är då också samtidigt krämigare och innehåller en högre halt koffein då man använder en annan blandning av bönor till skillnad mot vanligt bryggkaffe. En annan sak som uppskattas av espressoälskare världen över är att espresso är mer smakrik och ofta har en underton av nötter eller choklad. Då framförallt om man köper espressokaffe från Vietnam där dessa två undertoner är väldigt karaktäristisk för deras tradition och produktion.

Den moderna espressomaskinen uppfanns år 1937 av italienaren Achille Gaggia. Italien anses vara upphovs landet till den mindre kaffedrycken som kallas för espresso runt om i världen. Om man är från Italien eller har besökt landet är man kanske mer van att använda termen Caffé för att namnge denna populära dryck. Detta beror på att espresso är den traditionella kaffedrycken i Italien till skillnad från bryggkaffe som är mer vanligt i Sverige och resten av Norden. Om man beställer en Caffé i Italien får man därför garanterat en espresso om man inte istället använder termer som Americano eller Drip Coffee om man vill ha vanligt bryggkaffe.  Oavsett vilken kaffedryck man föredrar har den oftast en espresso som bas. Till exempel en latte innehåller cirka ¼ espresso och resten är skummad mjölk. Vid tillverkning av en mocha kombinerar men ¼ espresso med varm choklad och skummad mjölk för att få till den bästa konsistensen. Anledningen till att man använder just espresso som bas är att den är mer fast och smakrik än vanligt bryggkaffe och därför förhöjer smaken i drycker som har mjölk som huvudingrediens. Espresso har nämligen oftast en mer nötig och chokladliknande underton som kompletteras väl till skummad mjölk.

Vad är en espresso?

En kopp traditionell espresso är runt 2-4 cm starkare kaffe samt cellulosa och fetter vilket är den skumliknanden ytan som en kopp espresso har. Ju fylligare och krämigare kaffe desto mer cellulosa och fetter innehåller koppen. Olika typer av bönor innehåller olika mängder av dessa två ämnen. Så beroende på vilka bönor eller blandningar av bönor som används vid tillredningen av en espresso desto mer eller mindre skum får man som ett lager på espresson. Om man använder en espressomaskin hettas vatten upp till mellan 90-96 °C och vätskan pressas sedan genom finmalet kaffe för att man ska få den bästa smaken. De bönor eller blandningar av bönor som oftast används vid tillverkning av en espresso kan variera kraftigt. Bönorna skiljer sig markant mellan olika varumärken och kaffekedjor. Men i den traditionella italienska koppen espresso använder man normalt sätt 10-40% robustabönor som sedan blandas med arabica. Detta för att kaffet ska bli extra smakrikt och krämigt med en perfekt underton som passar de flesta.
